Philosophy and Reflections on the Role of the Online teacher

Teaching and gardening share a profound connection, where the environment serves as the classroom, and seeds symbolize the students destined to grow. As teachers water the seeds, they create an environment conducive to the cultivation of new knowledge and skills. Similar to how gardeners nurture crops with soil, water, and sunlight, online teachers foster student growth through meaningful learning, clear instructional objectives, and engaging, challenging, and authentic activities. Leveraging digital tools, online teachers provide space for students to expand their knowledge, taking the time to address misconceptions, analogous to removing weeds in a garden.

Both online and face-to-face teaching demand a deep understanding of the subject and content expertise. Online teachers, in addition, require basic technology skills and empathy for student engagement. Overcoming the sense of detachment in online learning, teachers organize activities like group research and online debates to bring students together. While a gardener assesses plant growth through body language, an online teacher evaluates progress through authentic activities.

Just as a garden hosts diverse plants with varying needs, online teachers must plan activities catering to all students. Clarity in instructional objectives is a key competency. Teachers articulate goals, organize activities, and discuss outcomes weekly to keep students focused and connected to the overarching objective.

While the goals of online and face-to-face teaching align, their paths differ. Course design is paramount in online teaching, requiring thoughtful planning as changes aren’t easily implemented on the fly. Basic technology skills and collaboration with team members are imperative. In face-to-face teaching, immediate feedback and adaptability are more feasible. Online teachers must constantly remind students of learning goals, be adaptable in pedagogical approaches, and provide timely feedback to address inquiries and ensure the overall success of the learning experience.
